“Gerda Steyn delivered a historic performance at the 2026 Comrades Marathon, smashing the Up Run record to claim her fifth title. Her victory, accompanied by a record R2.3 million prize, underscores her status as South Africa’s most dominant ultra-distance runner.”
The Comrades Marathon, South Africa’s most iconic ultra-distance race, once again delivered drama, triumph, and history. On July 8, 2026, Gerda Steyn etched her name deeper into the annals of athletics by winning her fifth Comrades Marathon title, breaking the Up Run record, and securing the largest prize purse in the event’s history. Her performance has sparked widespread celebration across the athletics community, reinforcing her reputation as the “Smiling Assassin” of South African road running.
The Race
The 2026 Comrades Marathon followed the traditional Up Run route from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, covering approximately 87 kilometers of grueling terrain. Steyn, already a four-time champion, approached the race with a “last race” mindset, determined to leave everything on the road. From the early stages, she established herself among the frontrunners, maintaining a blistering pace that averaged 4:01/km over 85km.
Her rivals attempted to match her tempo, but Steyn’s endurance and tactical brilliance proved unmatched. By halfway, she had built a commanding lead, and as the race progressed, it became clear that she was not only chasing victory but also the record books.
Breaking Records
Steyn crossed the finish line in Pietermaritzburg in record time, smashing the previous Up Run benchmark. This achievement marked her fifth Comrades title, a feat that places her among the most decorated athletes in the event’s century-long history. The record-breaking run earned her R2.3 million, the highest prize ever awarded to a female athlete in the Comrades.
Reaction and Legacy
The athletics community has hailed Steyn’s performance as legendary. Fans lining the route cheered her every stride, while commentators described her run as “a masterclass in endurance and determination.” Steyn herself expressed gratitude, noting that her mindset was fueled by the possibility that this could be her final Comrades appearance.
Her victory also underscores the growing prominence of women in ultra-distance running. Steyn’s dominance has inspired a new generation of South African athletes, particularly young female runners who see her as a role model.
The Men’s Race
While Steyn stole the headlines, the men’s race also delivered drama. George Kusche stunned the field with a bold gamble that paid off, securing his first Comrades crown and matching Steyn’s payday of R2.3 million. His victory highlighted the unpredictable nature of the Comrades, where strategy and resilience often outweigh raw speed.
Cultural Significance
The Comrades Marathon is more than a race; it is a cultural institution in South Africa. Steyn’s triumph resonates beyond athletics, symbolizing perseverance and national pride. Her record-breaking run will be remembered alongside other iconic sporting moments in South African history, reinforcing the Comrades as a stage where legends are born.
Looking Ahead
As Steyn hinted at retirement from the Comrades, speculation grows about her future in athletics. Whether she continues competing internationally or transitions into mentorship, her impact on South African sport is undeniable. Meanwhile, Kusche’s breakthrough suggests a new era in men’s ultra-distance running, with fresh talent ready to carry the torch.
Conclusion
Gerda Steyn’s fifth Comrades Marathon victory is a defining moment in South African athletics. Her record-breaking run, massive prize, and enduring legacy ensure that July 8, 2026, will be remembered as the day she cemented her place among the greatest athletes in the nation’s history.
