Glenrose Xaba Leads South African Athletics with Region 5 Marathon Victory in Pretoria

“Glenrose Xaba won the women’s 10km race in 33:48 at the Region 5 Marathon at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, delivering another notable performance in South African road running. The event brought together regional competitors and offered valuable World Athletics ranking points as athletes continue preparing for the 2027 World Athletics Road Running Championships.”

South African distance running continues to demonstrate its competitive strength following Glenrose Xaba’s victory in the women’s 10km race at the Region 5 Marathon in Pretoria. The Boxer Athletics Club athlete secured first place in the 10km event on Sunday, 1 November 2026, recording a time of 33 minutes and 48 seconds at the Union Buildings.

The competition, organised through a partnership involving Athletics South Africa, the African Union Sports Council Region 5 and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, provided an important platform for athletes representing different countries in southern Africa. In addition, the event offered World Athletics ranking points, making it particularly valuable for competitors seeking to strengthen their international standing ahead of future championships.

Xaba’s performance represented another encouraging achievement in her established distance-running career. The South African athlete has consistently demonstrated her ability to compete at a high level, particularly in road races, where endurance, tactical awareness and the ability to maintain pace are essential.

Xaba demonstrates consistency and competitive strength

Winning a competitive 10km race requires much more than physical endurance. Athletes must manage their energy, respond to changes in pace and maintain concentration throughout the course. Xaba demonstrated these qualities during the Pretoria competition, finishing ahead of a strong field of runners.

Her winning time of 33:48 highlighted her ability to maintain a competitive rhythm over the distance. Although the result was achieved in a regional competition rather than a global championship, it nevertheless represented a meaningful accomplishment for South African athletics.

According to the event report, Xaba described the conditions as very hot. She indicated that she had initially run alongside a leading group that included Irvette van Zyl, before the 10km and 21km competitors separated.

This approach allowed Xaba to benefit from the pace of experienced distance runners before concentrating on her own race. Consequently, her performance illustrated the importance of intelligent race management, particularly when weather conditions present additional challenges.

The result also reinforced the depth of South African women’s distance running, with local athletes continuing to challenge competitors from neighbouring countries.
