Dr Zamambo Mkhize to Represent South Africa at ITF World Tennis Masters Championships in Lisbon

“Dr Zamambo Mkhize, UCT academic and South Africa’s top-ranked women’s 40-and-over player, has been selected to compete at the ITF World Tennis Masters Tour World Championships in Lisbon this August. Her participation symbolizes both a personal milestone and a national achievement, as she becomes the only African woman in the tournament.”

South African tennis has received a significant boost with the announcement that Dr Zamambo Mkhize, a senior lecturer at the University of Cape Town’s African Gender Institute, will represent the nation at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Masters Tour World Championships in Lisbon, Portugal. Scheduled for August 2–15, 2026, the event will feature both team and individual competitions, bringing together the world’s finest Masters players.

A Full-Circle Journey

Dr Mkhize’s selection is more than just a sporting achievement—it is a full-circle life moment. Having first represented South Africa as a 16-year-old junior, she now returns to the international stage as an accomplished academic and athlete. Her journey began at age six in KwaZulu-Natal, where she quickly rose through interprovincial tournaments before earning a tennis scholarship at the University of Florida. Later, she combined academic excellence with sport, completing her PhD at the University of Pennsylvania under a Fulbright Scholarship.

National Recognition

In November 2025, Dr Mkhize achieved the number one ranking in South Africa’s women’s 40-and-over category, cementing her place as one of the country’s most consistent performers. Her selection for Lisbon is seen as a validation of her hard work and dedication. “Being selected to represent my country again as an adult is a full-circle life moment for me,” she said. “It proves that my first selection was not a fluke and reflects the culmination of my hard work over the last two years.”

Symbolic Milestones

The year 2026 carries special significance for Dr Mkhize. It marks 10 years since completing her PhD, five years since publishing her first book, and now, her return to representing South Africa on the world stage. She emphasized the importance of being the only African woman selected, calling it both an honour and a privilege.

Institutional Support

Tennis South Africa Masters Tournament Coordinator Blessing Hlomane congratulated Dr Mkhize, praising UCT for supporting her dual career in academia and sport. “We sincerely appreciate the university’s support in enabling her to pursue this prestigious opportunity while proudly representing both South Africa and UCT on the international stage,” Hlomane said.

Broader Impact on South African Tennis

Her selection comes at a time when South African tennis is gaining momentum, with recent successes in the Davis Cup World Group II and growing grassroots participation. Dr Mkhize’s achievement highlights the diversity and resilience of South African athletes, inspiring younger generations to pursue excellence both on and off the court.

Looking Ahead

From August 2–8, Dr Mkhize will compete in the team event, followed by the individual tournament from August 10–15. Facing some of the world’s strongest Masters players, she aims to showcase South Africa’s competitive spirit while advancing her personal journey of resilience and achievement.
