“South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana, thrashed Eritrea 5–0 in Cairo, with young forward Relebohile Mofokeng scoring twice in a breakout performance. The win leaves Bafana top of Group D with six points, firmly in control of their AFCON 2027 qualification campaign.”
South Africa’s Bafana Bafana produced a scintillating display in Cairo on Wednesday night, dismantling Eritrea 5–0 in their second Group D fixture of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The emphatic victory not only showcased the team’s attacking prowess but also marked a triumphant return for coach Pitso Mosimane, whose tactical acumen and leadership appear to have revitalized the squad.
Match Overview
The encounter at Al Salam Stadium was billed as a crucial test for both sides. Eritrea entered the match buoyed by a 1–1 draw against Kenya, while South Africa had already secured a 2–1 win over Guinea in their opening qualifier. From the outset, Bafana Bafana imposed themselves, pressing high and dictating the tempo.
Relebohile Mofokeng, the 20-year-old forward, stole the show. He opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a composed finish after a slick passing move. Just before halftime, he doubled the lead with a clinical strike, cementing his reputation as one of South Africa’s brightest prospects.
Sphephelo Sithole added a third early in the second half, capitalizing on a rebound after Eritrea’s goalkeeper Yonathan Sultan failed to hold onto a shot. Iqraam Rayners extended the lead in the 63rd minute, and substitute Luther Singh completed the rout in stoppage time.
Tactical Brilliance
Mosimane’s return to the helm was evident in the team’s structure and discipline. His emphasis on quick transitions and fluid attacking play overwhelmed Eritrea’s defense. The midfield trio controlled possession, while the backline remained resolute, ensuring Eritrea rarely threatened.
Star Performer: Relebohile Mofokeng
Mofokeng’s brace was more than just goals—it was a statement. Making his mark in only his second senior international appearance, he demonstrated composure, pace, and vision. His performance has sparked excitement among fans and pundits, with many tipping him as the future face of South African football.
Group D Implications
With six points from two matches, South Africa now leads Group D. Eritrea, with just one point, faces an uphill battle. Guinea, who lost to South Africa, will host Kenya next, a match critical for their survival in the qualifiers. Kenya, as co-hosts of AFCON 2027 alongside Tanzania and Uganda, are already assured of a place in the finals, but their participation in qualifiers provides valuable preparation.
Regional Significance
The victory resonates beyond the scoreboard. For South Africa, it signals a resurgence in continental football dominance. For Eritrea, the heavy defeat underscores the challenges of competing against established footballing nations.
Fan and Media Reaction
South African fans celebrated the emphatic win, praising Mosimane’s return and Mofokeng’s breakout performance. Media outlets highlighted the team’s renewed energy and tactical sharpness, while analysts noted the importance of maintaining momentum in upcoming fixtures.
Looking Ahead
Bafana Bafana’s next challenge will be maintaining consistency. With fixtures against Guinea and Egypt looming, the team must balance confidence with caution. Mosimane’s experience will be crucial in navigating the qualifiers, ensuring South Africa secures its place in AFCON 2027.
Conclusion
South Africa’s 5–0 demolition of Eritrea is more than just a victory—it is a statement of intent. With young stars emerging, experienced leadership at the helm, and a clear tactical identity, Bafana Bafana has positioned itself as a formidable contender in the race to AFCON 2027.
