The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), in partnership with MGI Tech and the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), has launched the 110K Human Genome Program. This landmark initiative will sequence 110,000 South African genomes, creating the country’s first comprehensive genomic reference database.
The program is powered by Africa’s first DNBSEQ-T7 sequencing platform, installed at the SAMRC Genomics Center in Cape Town. This ultra-high-throughput system delivers unmatched speed and accuracy, enabling large-cohort studies and reducing sequencing costs.
Professor Ntobeko Ntusi, CEO of SAMRC, emphasized that the program represents a strategic investment in precision medicine and genomic research capacity. By capturing Africa’s genetic diversity, the initiative will advance personalized medicine, improve disease management, and contribute to global genomic science.
The program also trains local researchers, builds bioinformatics capacity, and fosters sustainable expertise. It positions South Africa as a leader in genomics, ensuring African populations are represented in global datasets.
